Quick Hit: Bishop on Pirates

I'm once again coming a little late to this, but if you're looking for a primer on some of the basic culture and motivations of Somali piracy, check out Andrew Bishop's recent piece at ISN. Also, if you haven't made What You Must Read a regular stop, I highly recommend it.

Yes - everyone likes to lump the evils of the world together...if there's a way to bring Muslim terrorists into something, people will do it.

Of course, we could consider the roots of the piracy problem, which could lead to an actual solution that doesn't involve bombing, killing, or alienating more people.

What has been ignored has been the overtaking of Somalian fishing waters since the country's collapse in the early 90s. When the government couldn't defend its waters, fishing boats from other countries moved in. Initially, Somali fisherman started attacking these outside vessels and demand compensation for overfishing their waters...which, over time, has turned into piracy on a scale not seen since Captain Hook.
